Small Group Ministry
The Small Group Ministry program consists of intentional small groups that deepen and expand the ministry of a congregation, and provide opportunities for developing closer and more intimate relationships with others. The Small Group Ministry program also encourages participants to exlore matters of faith and meaning. According to Reverend Robert “Bob” Hill who has been instrumental in developing the Unitarian Universalist Small Group Ministry Program, “Small Group Ministry asks us not only to attend to the stresses of getting through the day but also to covenant together to do what we can to make a positive difference.”
Groups meet every other week to explore specific topics through a basic structure that builds trust through attentive listening and personal sharing. The unique features of groups in the Small Group Ministry program include:
- The groups are people-centered rather than task-centered. You may get to know people by serving on a committee with them, but that's not why committees exist. Committee meetings are designed to get something done, not to foster connections between people.
- The groups are not isolated, but are part of a program that is integrated with the larger life of the church. They are an important ministry of the church.
- The groups give back to the church and the wider community by annually performing some kind of service as a group project, to be determined by the group.
