Each fall for the past several seasons, the gallery spaces at All Souls Church have been filled with blessings of Peace in the form of Stuart Copans’ papercuts and paintings of the Hebrew word “Shalom” and its Arabic equivalent “Salaam.” This 10th Annual Papercuts and Peace exhibit during September and October 2019 is titled PEACE—INSIDE AND OUT. The show focuses on the importance of creating and maintaining internal peace while working towards peace in the external world.
As in earlier exhibits, part of the show involves collaboration. Initially these collaborations involved papercuts by Copans that were inspired by ancient tantric paintings used as a focus in meditation. More recently, collaborations between Lin Taggard and her teacher Don Fitzpatrick have involved works combining papercuts and harmonograms. During the opening reception, there will be demonstrations of the creative processes involved in the use of harmonographs to create harmonograms, a process that can be as peaceful and meditative as the final products.
An opening reception is set for Sunday, September 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please stop by to meet the artists and enjoy a bountiful refreshment table provided by the ASC Arts Committee. As Copans has professed, “Peace is a process not an event,” and the integration of papercuts and harmonograms, of text and abstraction, of inside and outside is an ongoing process which the artists hope will be visible both in their work and in the demonstrations they share during the reception on September 8.
All Souls is open from 9:00 to 12:00 on Monday through Friday in September and October, as well as during worship services and other public events in the building. For further information, call the ASC office at 802-254-9377.
