After a holiday hiatus, the ASC Book Group will reconvene to discuss 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann.
Contrary to what you probably learned in school, pre-Columbian Indians were not sparsely settled in a pristine wilderness; rather, there were huge numbers of Indians who actively molded and influenced the land around them. Using new findings from archeology, anthropology, and history, Mann reveals that Indians in North and South America were not living lightly on the land but were intensively landscaping and manipulating their worlds.
In asserting the value of this title, our own Steve Squires writes: “This book shows that half of what I was taught about the history of the Americas was wrong. Much of it wrong in ways that have a lot to do with racism, white supremacy, Euro-centric and Judeo-Christian centric thinking. All good UU topics.”
There will be four meetings to discuss this book, the first two being Saturday mornings January 11 and January 25 at 10 am.
